Arrival of Storefront 1.5

After the success of Storefront comes the newly improved Storefront 1.5, which achieves another coveted tag on wordpress.org. Its primary feature? A support for right-to-left languages in Storefront. The traditional RTL support standard overloads an additional stylesheet on top of the primary one.

With Storefront 1.5, if you install WordPress in a right-to-left language, the theme will automatically recognize it. It will then load a different set of stylesheets tailored to that language. This makes Storefront a stronger global theme solution for WooCommerce.

Featured Images

The previous version of Storefront didn’t cater to adding featured images to pages. Now, once you add a featured image to a page, it will appear on the frontend directly above the page title.

Scrolling Header Cart

Considered a handy feature, the header cart lets visitors access their cart total, and the number of items it contains. It also reveals the carts contents upon hover. Using Storefront 1.5, the cart dropdown now has a set height that scroll as more items are added.

Storefront WooCommerce Styling

A lot of themes we see, from Themeforest especially, do not style WooCommerce according to the best practice standards set by the Woocommerce authors.

The most common problem is overriding templates.  This causes the cost to update WordPress, Woocommerce and the theme itself to sky rocket down the track. You won’t have this problem with Storefront.

Shop Pages

When it comes to shop pages, you can style for all product details and WooCommerce widgets, such as the price filter. The number of products per page is also automatically adjusted to 12.

Single Product Page

Single product pages include appropriate WooCommerce styling as well. The product tabs are presented in a vertical layout, and the number of related products is adjusted to three.

Improved Mobile Design

From Storefront 2.0 and up, the theme now offers an improved mobile design for better mobile experience. The header section has been redesigned so that the content appears further up. This ensures that your visitors see more of the content on your WooCommerce store right away.

The theme also now offers a “best selling” products section on the home page. This is separate from product categories, recent products, featured products, top rated products and on sale products. Some other small changes have been put in place for better user experience. These include changes to styles, tables and embeds. The developers have also integrated with WordPress 4.5’s custom logo functionality. Adding a logo to your WooCommerce store is now made easier. Now there’s no need to install a plugin just to add your logo.

While Storefront provides a lot for free, there are some premium \add-ons that can add functionality or styling options to the theme.

It also lets you remove the product search and cart from the header.

Storefront Designer

The Storefront Designer plugin adds the ability to change header layouts and make the header remain at the top of the page on scroll (sticky header). It also allows you to adjust button layouts and styles, and change some typography options.

Storefront Parallax Hero

This plugin can be used to display a message and call to action over the top of an image on your homepage. It has a parallax effect, which means as the user scrolls the text and button appear to move over the image.

Child Themes

What is a child theme? According to the WordPress Codex:

A child theme is a theme that inherits the functionality and styling of another theme, called the parent theme. Child themes are the recommended way of modifying an existing theme.

Importance of a Child Theme – Easy and Safe Updates

When using a child theme, you will not lose any custom code or any custom styles that you have added to the child theme whenever you update the parent theme. Many website owners have learned the hard way losing custom code they have added to their themes after updating it. If you have a child theme, your custom updates are safe whenever a new version of the parent theme is available. We still recommend creating website backups every time you update your theme though.

Simple, clear, and customizable, the Storefront theme for WordPress has everything to help you achieve success in e-commerce. For a free theme, the design is simple and no-nonsense and WooCommerce integration is unmatched by any other theme.

It may be too plain for some and if you are one of those, just ask yourself. Is it your personal taste and desire for it to look pretty, or is it a decision based on your user experience and the ultimate profitability of your site? In our experience, often the simpler the site the better is the user experience and the more profitable the website.

How to Fix Checkout Problems in WooCommerce

One of the biggest problems a WooCommerce store owner can encounter is when the checkout fails. There are a lot of different types of issues that could happen during checkout, but these can be fixed easily if you can identify what is causing the problem. However, finding out the cause is not always easy for the average user. In this post, we will teach you how to fix the common checkout problems in WooCommerce.

The information in this post may or may not help with the specific problem that you are experiencing with your checkout. You may have a similar problem but the source could be different, hence the solutions mentioned here may not work for everyone. It is best to have a developer adept in both WordPress and WooCommerce make the suggested fixes for you. We also recommend that you create a staging/development site and do your debugging there rather than on the live site.

Most Common WooCommerce Checkout Issues

Here at Wooassist, a lot of new clients come to us with problems on their checkout. Having issues on the checkout page can be daunting as it can be difficult to figure out the cause. The checkout page is crucial because it is the last page of the “user shopping experience”. A simple error that could be fixed in a few minutes can hurt your business if it is not addressed swiftly. You could end up losing business opportunities and customers. To fix the problem, we need to figure out what the error is first.

Below are some common issues we encounter that you could be experiencing right now on your WooCommerce store.

Checkout Page Isn’t Available and is Just Redirecting Back to an Empty Cart

While there are many reasons why checkout would redirect to an empty cart, it’s usually because your hosting is not totally compatible with WooCommerce.

The issue is most common with stores that enabled “force https on checkout”. In this case, the issue could be caused by a PHP security module called Suhosin. WooCommerce already has an official fix posted for this.

Simply paste the code below in your server’s PHP settings.

Review Order Section is Stuck on Loading

When a customer enters their shipping/billing information, this triggers a script to reload the review order data. When there is an error in the script, it will just get stuck without an error shown that would’ve helped you understand what’s happening.

This usually happens when the returned data is not what WooCommerce expects. This is caused by either a plugin or template conflict. To fix this, you will need to check compatibility with all plugins installed and update any outdated WooCommerce templates.

Payment Option is Not Working

Some popular payments options are PayPal, Stripe, Authorize.net and eWay. These are the services that you’ve installed in your store to handle the payment process between you and your customers. This is the page where users enter their credit card information and hit the “place order” button.

Here are some scenarios where the payment option does not work:

Payment option is not available on checkout

You are sure that you have completely configured your payment option but it’s not showing up on the checkout page. This usually happens with stores that don’t have an SSL certificate installed and the payment option requires one. You can learn more about SSL in this post.

Authentication error pops up

When an authentication error pops up, this means there is something wrong between the connection of your store and your payment option service provider. To fix this, check that the credentials you entered in the payment option’s settings are correct.

Unknown error pops up

Unknown error popping up could mean that a PHP script in WooCommerce isn’t working properly. There are many things that could cause this. It may be due to a plugin conflict, or your hosting doesn’t support the custom AJAX endpoints utilized by WooCommerce. To fix this you will need to check each plugin installed. Try disabling the plugins one at a time and see if that fixes your problem.

Nothing happens after clicking “Place order” button

If nothing happens when you click the place order button, then most likely there is a JavaScript conflict in the checkout page. The best way to fix this is to check your browser’s console to see which scripts are in conflict. You’ll want a developer to do this for you though.

Use a Responsive Theme

You can also do a quick test by going to your WooCommerce store and then try scaling down the size of your browser. If you see the elements on your website move to adjust to the smaller window, then you are using a responsive theme. If you find that your theme is not responsive, don’t worry. You can switch to a responsive theme. We can recommend Storefront and the Genesis framework.

Storefront was made by the same developers that developed WooCommerce. It is built specifically for WooCommerce so you can expect full compatibility with WooCommerce and official WooCommerce plugins.

Genesis, on the other hand, is a framework. You need to use a Genesis child theme with the Genesis framework. Genesis is well-maintained, responsive and compatible with WooCommerce. 

User Test Your Mobile Site

Open your WooCommerce store on your smartphone and do some user testing. Perform actions that you expect your customers to do on your WooCommerce store. Important elements to test are:

Optimize Your Checkout Page

Your checkout page is one of the most important pages on your website. Limit your checkout form fields to only the necessary details. Remove any distractions to completing checkout. Make sure that the form fields are tall enough that they are easy to tap and fill out. Make the checkout button large enough so it is easy to tap. Don’t make the checkout process a burden to your customers.

Remove AutoPlay Videos and Pop-ups

Pop-ups and autoplay videos are annoying for desktop sites. Even more so on a mobile site. Don’t burden your customers with extra data charges from autoplay media. In some cases, these elements may be necessary. But if they don’t help you increase your sales, consider removing them. Instead, focus on making your customers click on your call-to-action buttons.

Improve Your Site Speed

Site speed has become very important as it is now a ranking factor for SEO. On the mobile platform, site speed is critical with mobile data speeds being slower than a wired internet connection. If your mobile site takes too long to load, the user will just leave. There are a lot of tools at your disposal to determine how you can improve your site speed. Google PageSpeed Insights even shows recommendations specific to your mobile site. Other tools that we can recommend are GTmetrix and Pingdom Website Speed Test. 

Optimize Your Images

This is related to site speed but deserves its own section. Many WooCommerce store owners neglect optimizing images and just upload willy nilly. If you upload large images without optimizing them, your mobile conversion rates would take a hit. You can use a plugin to optimize the images you’ve already uploaded. However, if you’ve uploaded images that have dimensions bigger than the image placeholders, they will need to be manually optimized. Optimize Your Site Navigation on Mobile

Poor navigation can make or break a mobile website. Make sure that your mobile website is easy to navigate otherwise your customers will leave your site out of frustration. Use a hamburger menu. If you are using a responsive theme, the hamburger menu should be built in. If not, you can custom code your mobile menu or use a plugin.

Offer Multiple Payment Gateways

It is important to offer the payment gateway that your customers prefer. On the mobile platform especially, depending on your location, mobile wallets are a thing. How to Recover Abandoned Carts in WooCommerce

It’s not uncommon for ecommerce shoppers to abandon carts. You may not know it, but your store might also be suffering from carts being abandoned. This problem can be addressed however. To start, you must determine why your customers abandon their carts.

Why online shoppers abandon carts and what you can do about it?

There are various reasons why online shoppers abandon their carts. We lay out the most common ones and what you can do to address them.

Checkout is Too Complicated

Your customers will nitpick and that is to be expected. When you make your customers jump hoops during checkout, you’re not doing them a favor. Your checkout should be quick and straightforward. If you must add some other stuff that will complicate checkout, consider if you can add it on the thank you page instead. The thank you page is the page where the customer is redirected to after making a successful purchase. If you need help tweaking your thank you page, the Wooassist team can help.

Users Need to Create an Account to Check Out

Internet users are already burned out having to create an account for each internet service that they use. Don’t add to that burden. Don’t force your customers to create an account if it’s not necessary. To enable guest checkouts on WooCommerce, go to your WordPress Dashboard, click on WooCommerce > Settings. Under the Account and Privacy tab, enable “Allow customers to place orders without an account”. You can tweak other account related settings here to your liking.

Too Many Checkout Form Fields

The default WooCommerce checkout page is good enough as it is. There is no need to add more fields unless necessary. If you’ve edited your checkout page before to add some unnecessary fields, look into it and consider removing it.

Unexpected Charges

Customers will abandon your checkout when they see the shipping fee. No one will force you to offer free shipping if it will make your business unsustainable. There are however some things that you can do to reduce abandoned carts as a result of shipping and other fees. People now are more accepting of shipping fees. For other fees, be transparent from the get-go. If you charge taxes, handling fees, and other fees, make it clear starting from the product page that you charge these fees. If they are suddenly greeted by these fees on checkout, it will look like unscrupulous practice.

Too Many Clicks to Checkout

Reducing cart abandonment is all about simplifying your product purchase process. Ideally, it should not take more than three clicks for a customer to check out. If it takes four clicks to check out, that is one click too many. Get rid of unnecessary barriers to completing checkout.

Don’t Make it Hard to Contact You

Some of your prospective customers will look for your contact details before they make a purchase. If they added a product to their cart but could not find your contact information or even a contact us page, there is a high likelihood that that user will abandon that cart. To prevent this from happening, make sure you have a contact us page. Even better, if you can add your email or phone number on your WooCommerce store’s header.

Payment Issues

Another common reason for abandoning shopping carts is payment issue. When the customer tries to pay for his/her order and it fails, you can bet that cart will be abandoned. The solution here is simple. Offer more than one mode of payment. Some common payment channels you can use are Paypal, Stripe, Authorize.net, Apple Pay, Amazon Pay, and Square.

Other Things You Can Do to Reduce Cart Abandonment

Show Security Certificates

To be able to sell your products or services online, you’ll need to be able to establish that you are trustworthy. You can show security certificates and security seals on your checkout page to improve your trust rating. Some security seals that you can add to your site as Norton, McAfee and TRUSTe.

Offer Free Shipping

Free shipping can significantly reduce your cart abandonment rates. However, not every business can make a profit when offering free shipping. What Do I Need to Install Apple Pay on WooCommerce?

To install apple pay with WooCommerce, there are a few requirements. First, the store must support Stripe payments. You’ll also need the WooCommerce Stripe Extension which is free. Stripe is currently available in 10 countries, namely, Australia, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, Spain, France, New Zealand, and the United States.

How to Enable Apple Pay on Your WooCommerce Store

Just follow the steps below to enable Apple Pay on your WooCommerce store. If you have already set up the WooCommerce Stripe Extension, please proceed to Step 7.

    1. Install and activate the WooCommerce Stripe Extension. You can download it here or just search for it in the plugins page.
    2. Head over to WooCommerce > Settings > Checkout > Stripe and check the “Enable Stripe” box. Make sure you disable “Enable Test Mode” if you want to go live. If you are already accepting payment through Stripe, go to Step 7.
    3. Input your Live Secret Key and Live Publishable Key. You can get the information from your Stripe account.
    4. Input the Statement Descriptor. This is the text that will appear on your customer’s credit card statement.

    5. Choose whether to “Capture Charge Immediately” or not. If you choose not to charge immediately, you will need to manually initiate the charge through the WooCommerce order page.
    6. You can choose to “Enable Stripe Checkout” for the plugin to create a pop-up that requests details. Choose this option if you want to accept Bitcoin.
    7. To enable Apple Pay, tick on the Enable Apple Pay box.
    8. Under “Apple Pay Button Style”, you can choose what color you want the Apple Pay button to be.

    9. Under “Apple Pay Button Language”, you can enter the ISO code for the language you want to use. For English, just use “en”.
    10. Click on Save Changes when done.

That’s it. You are now ready to accept Apple Pay payments on your WooCommerce store.
